In recent years, mobile technology has become pervasive in our culture. However, despite its widespread use, the potential of mobile technology has yet to be fully tapped by the educational sector. As mobile devices become more sophisticated, they show increasing promise for use as educational tools. In this presentation, we will discuss some of the specific opportunities and challenges relevant to K-12 education that are presented by mobile learning devices. Survey cross section of students returned: Types of devices are smart phones. Students would use mobile devices for research, notes, collaboration, online textbooks. Use with homework to communicate with classmates on homework, organization, docs. Parent Views think that mobile tech increase engAgement, preparers students for real world. If school allowed mobile devices 62% said they would provide that mobile device. 11% said it was the responsibility of the school to provide the device. Case Studies Project Connect in NC using smart phones to engage students in studies and to increase grad rate. Pinky Dinky Doo podcasts for iPod. MIT working on augmented reality. ACU gave all teachers mobile phones. They are leaders in online learning at college level. Korea, Taiwan, Japan has infrastructure to support online learning. Teacher need to go to the iSchool Initiative to fine Apps that support what we do in school everyday. Apps are ranked by teachers as relevancy to learning. Example of good App is WildLab. Another site is GoKnow that promotes high test scores. Challenges include mostly the unknown challenges in mobile learning. Challenges includes the many types of mobile devices and their capabilities. Teachers think mobile devices are a student distraction and no equity. Many teaches don't know how to use it in the classroom and want ulu to support it. Largee issues ar we don't know what they are doing, downloading, cheating? Are these unique to mobile or realities of the day? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? Pedagogy for Mobile Learning--no mobile learning specific pedagogy. It is personal, dynamic, social, user defined, ubiquitous. Learning occurs outside the formal setting and is self directed. We tend to forget the self directed piece. Pedagogies with mobile learning include constructivist, situated, PBL, context awareness, collaborative, social cultural theory. VS Apps to consider include Timed Reading, Virtual Coaches that uses GPS tech to track activity and set goals. Virtual world Kim Possible at Disney World to solve a mystery.
